Steven E. Werner

Steven E. Werner, passed away peacefully on August 19, 2025, in Mequon, Wisconsin, at the age of 83 years. Born on June 27, 1942, in West Bend, Wisconsin, he dedicated much of his life to the pursuit of knowledge and the enrichment of others.

Steven was a professor for 30 years in the University of Wisconsin System, where he taught until his retirement in 2004. His academic journey began at Lawrence University, where he graduated summa cum laude in 1964. He furthered his studies as a Woodrow Wilson Fellow at Yale University, then earned masters and doctoral degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

An avid reader and traveler, Steven was keen to visit sites of historical significance. His membership in the American Historical Association and election to Phi Beta Kappa reflect his commitment to excellence and scholarly achievement.

Steven leaves behind a loving family who will cherish his memory. He is survived by his wife, Julia nee Stewart; his sister, Sara (Robert) Washicheck; his nephew, Andrew Washicheck; and his niece, Jill (Sean) Hadfield. He was preceded in death by his parents, Erwin Werner and Dolores nee Kluever.

Family and friends are invited to honor Steven's life at St. Nicholas Orthodox Church located at N65W6503 Cleveland Street, Cedarburg, WI. A visitation will be held on August 23, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, concluding with Trisagion prayers at 11:00 AM. The funeral will be held at 11:30 AM. Immediately following the service interment will take place at Zur Ruhe Cemetery, Cedarburg. In lieu of flowers, memorials to St. Nicholas Orthodox Church or Lawrence University are appreciated.
