Sheldon Papenfus

Sheldon “Shelly” Papenfus, a cherished husband, devoted father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on May 17, 2026, in Mequon, Wisconsin, following a brief bout of pneumonia. Born on April 5, 1935, in Wausau, Wisconsin, Sheldon lived a life marked by dedication, warmth, and a steadfast commitment to those he loved.

A proud graduate of Wausau High School’s Class of 1954, Sheldon distinguished himself early on as track captain, demonstrating a natural leadership that continued throughout his life. His commitment to service was evident in his military tenure; he honorably served in the United States Army from 1955 to 1957. Beyond his military service, Sheldon’s passion for the outdoors and community was nurtured through the Boy Scouts, where he earned the esteemed Eagle Scout Award and served as a Scout Master, guiding young scouts with patience and wisdom. Sheldon had a loving passion for all animals.

Sheldon’s professional career was rooted in his skill and craft as a lithographer, working for Times Printing in Random Lake. His dedication to quality and his work ethic reflected the same principles of steadfastness and attention to detail that characterized every aspect of his life.

An avid sportsman, Sheldon played in the Ozaukee Senior Softball League and took great pride in his induction into the SR. Ozaukee Softball Hall of Fame. His crowning achievement in the league came in 2019 when he and his team won the league championship, a testament to his enduring athletic spirit and teamwork even into his later years.

Sheldon’s zest for life was evident in his love of travel, particularly to Mexico, where he found joy and relaxation. In his youth, he was an enthusiastic water-skier, embracing the thrill of adventure with the same sweet smile and gentle kindness that endeared him to all who knew him.

He is lovingly survived by his wife of many years, Penny (nee Gease) Papenfus, who stood by his side through all of life’s seasons. Together they raised two devoted children: Tracey (Chris) Elbe and Amy-Jo (Craig) Ladwig. Sheldon’s legacy continues in his grandchildren—Ryan Elbe, Kimberly (Mitch) Saari, Matthew Elbe, Kyle Elbe, Jaden Papenfus, Bryce Ladwig, and Evan and Brianna Ladwig—as well as his great-grandchildren, Lane, Callie and Blake Saari. He is also dearly remembered by a niece Michelle; cousins: Carol Benning and James Zane, other relatives, and a wide circle of friends who cherished his kindness and easy smile.

Sheldon was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Marcelite (nee Sheldon) Papenfus, and his brother Ned Papenfus and nephew Eric Papenfus leaving a profound sense of loss within his family and community.

Known as a sweet guy who was always smiling, Sheldon Papenfus will be remembered for his loyalty, his quiet strength, and his unwavering devotion to family and friends. His life was a luminous example of service, sportsmanship, and sincere kindness, and he leaves behind a legacy steeped in love and respect that will continue to inspire all who were privileged to know him.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 27, 2026 - 3:00 PM at Pilgrim United Church of Christ 1621 2nd Ave. Grafton, WI with military honors immediately after the service. Visitation will be held at the church on Wed. from 1:00 PM - 2: 45 PM. Private interment will be at Washington Co. Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials to American Heart Association or Pilgrim Untied Church of Christ in Grafton.
