Helen A. Abare of Cedarburg passed away peacefully on May 31, 2025 at the age of 95. She was born and raised in Windsor, Vermont to the late Roy and Grace Abare. Helen was preceded in death by her brother, Edward Abare and sister-in-law, Dorothy Abare. She is survived by her nieces: Andrea (Joe) Proite, Kerrie (Malcolm) Tisdale, Jackie (Joel) Dhein and Pam (Mike Millius) Abare. Further survived by 10 great nieces and nephews and 3 great-great nieces.
Helen was a registered nurse and spent much of her career in Miami. She eventually moved to Shorewood to be closer to her brother Ed & his family. Her proudest role was being an aunt. She was lovingly known as “Auntie Helen” and later simply “AH” to not only her family, but all of their friends as well. She was at every family dinner, holiday and birthday. Though she was most recently in Cedarburg, she considered Shorewood and Whitefish Bay home. She had many wonderful friends she cherished spending time with.
Auntie Helen was a voracious reader, always having a mystery at her bedside. She was an avid game player, playing with friends and family every chance she got. Her favorites included Backgammon, Kismet, Scrabble and Gin Rummy. She kept her mind sharp into her 90s by always doing the Sunday crossword puzzles. She had the confidence and intelligence to complete it in pen each week. Auntie Helen was a chocolate lover and never went a day without it. Even as her health declined she kept her sweet tooth, having Andrea and Jackie refill the bag of chocolates she kept next to her. To know Auntie Helen is to know she had a sassy side and would tell it like it is, but her love for her family was always evident.
We will remember her fondly whenever we play one of her favorite games or have a Hershey nugget.
Thank you to North Shore at Home Hospice and Cedarburg Health Services for their dedicated care. A special thank you to Pam Taormina for her friendship and the compassionate care she gave Auntie Helen for so many years.
Private services will be held by the family.
