Guenther Erich Ratzmer 2/18/1939 to 3/25/2026

Guenther Erich Ratzmer, born on February 18, 1939, in Berlin, Germany, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on March 25, 2026, in Grafton, Wisconsin. He was 87 years old.

Guenther was the beloved son of Erich August Ratzmer and Wilhelmine Ratzmer (Scharf). He grew up in Germany and received his education there before embarking on a life filled with dedication to his family, career, and passions.

In August 1962, Guenther enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving until March 1968. His fluency in German led him to an assignment in Germany, where he worked in public relations to assist farmers whose lands had been impacted by military operations. This role exemplified his commitment to bridging understanding and fostering goodwill.

On February 14, 1976, Guenther married the love of his life, Jan Champlain, in San Mateo, California. Together they built a beautiful life over five decades of marriage. They were blessed with three children: Heidi Gonwa (Chad), Richard Ratzmer (Melissa Bahlert), and Kirstin Palkovic (Andy). Guenther’s legacy continues through his cherished grandchildren -Wilhelmina Carter nee Palkovic, (Colin), David and Gabrielle Gonwa, Evelyn, and Caleb Ratzmer, and two great-grandsons.

Guenther dedicated over 30 years of his professional life as a diesel mechanic for Chevron Corporation. His expertise and work ethic earned him respect among colleagues and clients alike.

In his leisure time, Guenther found joy in several hobbies that reflected his diverse interests. A passionate soccer fan, he loved watching German Bundesliga and English soccer matches. Marklein Trains was another hobby he enjoyed. Especially building the layouts and converting the engines to digital. He also spent countless hours researching the history behind old coins gifted to him by his sister Edith Nickless, who preceded him in death along with their parents. Additionally, Guenther enjoyed tinkering with his classic 1973 Corvette T-Top—a prized possession that brought him great satisfaction.

Guenther’s warmth and kindness left an indelible mark on those who knew him. His family and friends will forever treasure the memories of his love and devotion. May his memory bring comfort to all who were fortunate enough to know him.
