Daniel Richard Sachs, 89, of Mequon, WI, made his way from this life to the next on November 28, 2025. He was born on August 29, 1936 to Milton and Mildred (Moehring) Sachs of Kaukauna, WI.
Dan is survived by his children: Lynn (Jim) Christmas, Bryan (Kathy), Michele (Keith) Degner, Gail (Forrest) Gallagher, and Cheryl (David) DeBoer. He is further survived by 23 grandchildren and great grandchildren: Jennifer, Spencer, Clayton, Andrew, Zack, Matt, Nick, Kelly, Shannon, Teddy, Alannah, Ethan, Daisy, Billy, Taylor, David, Jack, Noah, Evan, Ella, Zachary, Paisley, and Dane. Also remaining to cherish his memory are siblings Jeanne, Doug, Joyce, and Chuck.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife of 68 years, Vivian, brother Dale, and his sister Joanne. His beautiful daughter, Kerry (David) Taylor, will greet him in Heaven with peanuts, popcorn, and candy.
Dan graduated in 1959 from the University of Wisconsin with his BS in Chemical Engineering, and from there, his career focused on the paper making industry. While he was always interested in books and learning, winning a full scholarship to university was a turning point in his life, one that cemented his love for books, learning, and education.
Even greater than his love for books was his love of family. For a man who did not read fiction, he certainly found himself living a rather fairy tale life. On September 1, 1956, he married his soul mate, the love of his life, Vivian, and they never looked back. They worked hard to raise their six children, and together, they made a wonderful home and life. The white picket fence was never formally installed, but all the rest was there.
In his free time, and especially in his well earned retirement, Dan very much enjoyed tennis, gardening, and family gatherings. But, the interests that truly and fully captured his attention were learning and his books. He immersed himself in the study of Philosophy, Theology, Psychology, and some Physics thrown in for fun. He mentored all of his grandchildren in these topics and was devoted to sharing a love of learning.
Dan didn’t just study, he was consumed by the pondering of “The Big Questions”. One of his favorite philosophers was Socrates, who believed in the importance of asking the right questions. Our deeply loved father didn’t mind having the last word. So, we are going to let him ask a few last questions…
What does it mean to live a good life?
Have you tried learning about non dualistic thinking?
What is the Mind?
