Hertha Schramm, of West Bend, was called to her heavenly home on Wednesday, October 4, 2017, at the age of 90 years. Hertha was born in Jackson, the daughter of the late Joseph Rusch and the late Renata (nee Gilbert) Rusch. It gave Hertha great joy to go with her husband, Carl, to David’s Star Ev. Lutheran Church where they both were baptized, confirmed and married. Hertha loved singing in the church choir for approximately 70 years and enjoyed playing trumpet and handchimes. Besides music Hertha served as the Ladies’ Aid President multiple times as well as contributing time to the Lutheran Woman’s Missionary Society. David’s Star was right across the road from the Rusch farmstead so Hertha and Carl obtained an acre of the family land to build their first home. Many enjoyable years were spent at the home which held a beautiful view of the church from many windows. Another joy for Hertha was spending time in the gardens behind her house. Her bounteous beans, beets, carrots, peas and raspberries, to name a few, were frozen and canned every summer for her family to enjoy throughout the winter. Many times she took some of her flower arrangements to the County Fair and to the tables for the Mission Festival meals. As her children got older, Hertha was a 4-H and Pioneer leader where she shared her knowledge of sewing and baking. The smell of the freshly baked bread she made on Saturdays is still in our memories. Hertha’s baking of Christmas cookies was a joy to the whole family big and small. Her husband, Carl, was known to be a faithful spouse and cookie decorator, too. Her grandchildren all loved her cookies, rice and meat recipe and scotcheroos! When the family up north vacation came every summer she would treat everyone to pans of her perfected scotcheroos. Hertha and Carl’s eleven grandchildren were very special to her and she loved babysitting them and playing card games with them. Every grandchild has a pair of pillowcases crotched by Grandma. Because of time spent with their grandma, her grandchildren have a close bond. And when the great-grandchildren started to arrive her joy was double fold. Hertha is survived by her loving children, Lois (Tom) Most, Darwin (Bonnie) Schramm, and Diane (Dave) Behm, sister, Arleen Ziemer, and sister-in-law, Mildred Kaiser. She is further survived by 11 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Hertha was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Carl Schramm. A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, October 7, 2017, 2PM at David’s Star Ev. Lutheran Church, in Jackson. Visitation will take place on Saturday, at the church, from 12Noon until 1:45PM. Hertha will be laid to rest next to her beloved husband, Carl Schramm at David’s Star Ev. Lutheran Cemetery immediately following the funeral service. Rev. Kurt Loescher will officiate the services. In lieu of flowers, memorials to David’s Star Ev. Lutheran Church or to Kettle Moraine Lutheran High School are appreciated. The family would especially like to thank the loving and caring staff at New Perspectives (formerly called Lighthouse) in West Bend, for all of their wonderful care throughout the years.
